The importance of kastom economies
Maintaining access to customary lands creates stability and a social safety net for communities throughout Melanesia. It is this access to lands that strengthens our kastom or traditional economies. Kastom economies allows our islands to safely withstand global economic crises, while other countries face tremendous social deprivation and slow recovery times.
MILDA supports kastom economies as a way of supporting the peoples of Melanesia to make more informed decisions about the kind of development they want to see on their customary lands and so they can become partners, rather than bystanders in local development decisions
