logging
protecting our forests
Unregulated logging causes devastation to the ecosystems of birds and animals throughout Melanesia. MILDA calls for unity among customary land owners to increase their protections of local forests from deforestation. Where there is mass deforestation, mining companies or mono-crops like palm oil plantations destroy biodiversity and displace local communities. Places such as West Rennell in the Solomon Islands and forests in Papua New Guinea have witnessed illegal extraction of millions of cubic metres of local timber by hundreds of foreign companies with little to no benefit for customary land owners.
