ban on nuclear weapons

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW)entered into force on January 21, 2021. The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) celebrated the day with partner organizations, around the globe. MILDA supports this treaty for our collective futures.

Pacific nations that have ratified the treaty include:

Vanuatu, Fiji, Palau, Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu, Samoa, & New Zealand

Pacific nations that have acceded the treaty include:

Cook Islands & Niue

But even though there are 86 signatories and 56 states parties who have joined the TPNW, there are still countries unwilling to bend for the good of humanity and even those, such as Japan, who are threatening to dump nuclear waste into the Pacific.

MILDA co-founder and Leader of the Opposition Party in Vanuatu called for a protest against these actions by the Japanese government.

Additionally, France continues to deny the tragedies of nuclear testing in French Occupied Polynesia by propagating the theory of “clean nuclear tests”. MILDA leader Hilda Lini sent a message of solidarity to French Polynesia, reminding all of us the Maohi Lives Matter.

“Vanuatu is one of the few countries in the Pacific privileged to host an embassy of Japan. We need to make the protest known at the bilateral level. Vanuatu and Japan are long-term development partners. We are very good friends. We expect Japan should listen if we make the approach.”

- Ralph Regenvanu, Oppostion Party Leader
