Papua New Guinea

MILDA was born out of a meeting in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea in 2009. Among those present were members of the PNG based Bismarck Ramu Group (BRG). BRG also hosted MILDA in 2011 to determine the role of the secretariat. BRG works with local communities to build their capacity resist exploitation of their customary lands and waters. BRG aims to ensure indigenous people are well informed and empowered to take control over their land and resources. They are a member group of MILDA to stop exploratory seabed mining, to protect the rivers and marine ecosystems being polluted by the Ramu Nickel Mine in North Madang and to protect the biodiversity of the Sepik River being poisoned by the Frieda Mine and government operated tanneries and they fight illegal logging.
